The adaptive advantage of different patterns of center-of-mass motion and their putative energy savings remain questionable in small-bodied mammals.
When we examined the number of bouts greater than 30 and 60 s in duration, we found a significant difference between the light and dark sides in all light contrast conditions. CIE enhanced drinking in both groups as compared to air-treated animals and CIE treated lesioned mice showed an additional increase in ethanol drinking as compared to CIE sham controls.

Moreover, we provide evidence for a consistency in stimulus preference for objects and pictures, suggesting a correspondence of in how macaques perceive objects and their pictorial stimuli. I. On the first exposure to EPM, both rats and opossums avoided entering open arms. In male and female gray short‐tailed opossums (Monodelphis domestica), same‐sex interactions were characterized by high levels of threat behavior (open‐mouth postures and screeching vocalizations). We tested gray short-tailed opossums with items from four different food categories prior to occluding access to the vomeronasal organ. Samollow
In viral injected mice, baseline drinking was not altered by expression of the inhibitory DREADD receptor and repeated cycles of CIE exposure enhanced drinking in DREADD and virus control groups.

Unfortunately, research on the role of UVR in inducing melanoma in humans has been hampered by the lack of a mammalian model in which melanoma can be induced by UVR alone. In addition, the model has clear potential for testing the efficacy of cholesterol-lowering drugs.

This level of dietary fat corresponds to about 40% of calories from fat, equivalent to the mean in many industrialized societies. The results further indicated that 68% of the total variance in the population is attributed to variation at this gene locus.
We decided to investigate the behavior of opossums in an unfamiliar space, and towards a new object presented in the already familiarized space of the same OF apparatus.
The central nervous phenotypes of transgenic mice were rescued following improved hypophosphatemia by the high-phosphate diet intake. On the second day, opossums shifted a significant part of their activity to the internal and central parts of the field, while thigmotaxy dominated in the rats’ behavior till the end of the experiment.
Other papers describe their sexual behavior [14], [15], [16] and the repertoire of chemical communication [40], [41].

As their pups are born at a very early stage of development, they were introduced as laboratory animals for the developmental research [6], [11], [12], [24], [31], [33], [35], [38]. Pentobarbital induced this hyperactivity at higher doses (maximum at 30 mg/kg); while diazepam at higher doses (4 and 8 mg/kg) mainly decreased the traveled distance during 0–1 h but increased that in the periphery during 1–2 h. On the other hand, both theophylline and caffeine generally increased the traveled distance in the central region; this effect lasted longer with increasing dose. The results of chemical and gas chromatography analysis indicated that CCPS was mostly composed of glucose with high contents of uronic acid and sulfate. Cell lines clonally derived from pigmented cells from an affected lymph node provided definitive evidence of malignancy in this model ( Robinson and others 1994 ). The gray short-tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica) has become a useful marsupial for biomedical research since it breeds reliably in the laboratory. Kammerer

The most probable explanation of this more active strategy used by opossum while dealing with an unknown environment or object is a different ecology of the species.
UVR is not a factor in the induction or promotion of melanoma in the Sinclair swine model ( Greene and others 1994 ) and in mice, UVR must be combined with chemical carcinogens to induce melanomas ( Kripke 1979 ). These recombination and cytogenetic characteristics parallel those previously observed in an Australian dasyurid, Sminthopsis crassicaudata ( Bennett and others 1986 ).
The gray short-tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica) is a small marsupial gaining recognition as a laboratory animal in biomedical research. C6 and C7 have not yielded recombinants in either sex, and also are very tightly linked in eutherian mammals ( Coto and others 1991 ; Eldridge and others 1983 ; Orren and others 1985 ). WS
Deficits in cortical function may contribute to alcohol-abuse disorders by impeding an individual's ability to control drinking. Animals descended from ancestors from Population 1 and Population 2, and having less than 30% of their genetic material derived from Population 1, are designated as members of Admixed Population 2. Studies of the opossums’ behavior are scarce.
Still other areas have arisen simply because preliminary studies on physiological systems of M. domestica revealed research opportunities that did not exist for the conventional laboratory animal species that were available. There are marked differences in behavior between rats and opossums. For example, in the open field, possums switch from freezing and thigmotaxy to investigation of the central space earlier and investigate new objects placed there more intensely (Węsierska et al., 2003).Therefore, in comparison with the laboratory rat, behavior of the gray short-tailed opossum seems to be driven less by fear and more by a motivation to actively investigate novelty (curiosity, neotic preference).

Different species, strains and mutants of rodents react differently to the introduction of a novel object into the space they know, from avoiding it (neophobia) to its intense exploration [4], [53]. Guajardo
While the behavior of an animal on its first exposure to the novel environment depends on its innate strategy of coping with sudden, anxiety-evoking events, during consecutive exposures that behavior decreases due to habituation of fear and may be replaced by a different behavior [1], [50]. The second irradiation treatment schedule involved shaving and irradiating the weanlings three times per week, as in the earlier experiments. It is docile, breeds readily in captivity, and produces large litters (typically 6-13). In M. domestica, which are low responders, this ratio is relatively constant regardless of diet: 0.40 + 0.06 mg/100 ml and 0.55 + 0.11 rog/100 ml for the standard and challenge diets, respectively. Here we present the first three-dimensional, multimodal atlas of the Monodelphis opossum …

For hepatoprotective activity in vivo, the administration of CCPS significantly decreased the serum levels of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase, inhibited the formation of malondialdehyde in liver and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) in serum and restored the liver activities of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase in BCG/LPS-induced immunological liver injury mice.
The gray short-tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica) is a small South American member of the Didelphidae family of opossums. Transgenic mouse model of malignant skin melanoma. Such a high contribution by a single gene to any quantitative character is unusual, and emphasizes the potential value of the M. domestica model. Effects of substrate diameter on locomotor biodynamics were studied in the gray short-tailed opossum ( Monodelphis domestica ). The laboratory opossum is particularly susceptible to the development of these abnormalities after repeated exposure to low doses of UVR, and provides an excellent model for investigation of the biological mechanisms involved. GM
It was postulated, that the proportion of entries into the open and the enclosed arms is a measure of balance between the two strategies of coping with the unknown [36]. Since more than 60% of their gene loci have alleles that are identical by descent, these animals are valuable for research designed to detect recessive genes for susceptibility to experimentally induced diseases. No differences in ethanol consumption were observed between sham and lesioned mice during access to increasing concentrations of ethanol (3–40%) every other day for 7 weeks.

Therefore, in the present study, we decided to investigate the opossums’ behavior in another standard laboratory test eliciting the anxiety-induced behavior, the open-field (OF) test. Fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23) is a potent circulating phosphaturic factor associated with renal phosphate wasting.
At the end of this time period, transgenic animals on the normal diet showed impaired spatial learning and memory. Report of the committee on comparative gene mapping. Both results suggest reduced anxiety. Two linkage groups have been identified in M. domestica, and both exhibit much lower recombination rates in females than in males ( van Oorschot and others 1992b , 1993 ). VandeBerg

The hepatoprotective effect of CSPS might be partly due to its immunoregulatory effect by inhibiting TNF-α production and antioxidant activities to protect biological systems against the oxidative stress, which were dependent on the chemical and structural properties of CCPS. Food and water were freely available in the, Fig.
These results, that are consistent with those of our earlier experiments in the elevated plus maze (EPM), show that in response to novelty Monodelphis opossums change their behavior from defensive to exploratory faster than rats and then explore it more intensely. Atwood

The age of the … We compared the behavior of the gray short-tailed opossums (Monodelphis domestica) and Long–Evans rats during repeated exposures to the open-field (OF) test. Exposure to environmental or artificial UVR is widely believed to be a contributing factor to loss of transparency (opacification) of the cornea and to angiogenesis (the formation of blood vessels by neovascularization) (discussed in Applegate and Ley 1991 ). 6) could have been be related to a decrease in exploratory behaviour . The characteristics of M. domestica lipoproteins under these two dietary regimens have been investigated in detail ( Rainwater and VandeBerg 1992 ). Birmingham
A few animals exhibited slight erythema after the initial exposures, but none exhibited severe sunburn. Although the data are too limited to be interpreted as indicative of fixed allelic differences, they do support the notion of substantial differences in gene frequencies between the populations ( Perelygin and others 1994 ).
